IUPUI Response to the Garissa Terror Attack

IU and Moi University are supporting Garissa students who experienced the horrific attacks killing 147 fellow students and Kenyans.
Garissa University College is a branch of Moi University, one of IUPUI’s key partners. IUPUI’s relationship with Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, dates back to 1989, when the IU School of Medicine began collaboration with Moi University’s Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The IU Center for Global Health has established a fund in support of those students who will be transferred to the Eldoret/Kesses campus of Moi University on May 20.
Donate to Garissa students through AMPATH- Choose the option for the Indiana Institute for Global Health.
- Write “Garissa students” in the Additional Comments section to ensure the donation gets directed appropriately.
Funds raised will be used to support counseling services for students, specifically training counseling leaders who can assess and aid those students who experienced the horrific violence and lost loved ones. IUPUI staff and faculty are in close contact with colleagues at Moi University’s School of Medicine and Psychology Department to understand the most pressing needs and provide targeted assistance.
Funds may also be used for students’ basic needs, as many were forced to leave their dorms immediately during the attacks.
IUPUI also held a Candlelight Vigil for Kenya on April 16 with a procession through campus with approximately 100 students, staff, faculty, and community members. Organized by African Student Association, students shared poems and reflections and organized intentional conversations reflecting on the attacks.

Dear Vice Chancellor Mibey:
On behalf of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, I am writing to express our deepest condolences regarding the terrible acts of violence at Garissa University College on April 2nd.
We know that these acts of terror are a tragedy for the entire Kenyan nation, and for all universities and peoples within and outside of Kenya.
Moi University, and especially your leadership, has been instrumental in promoting peace in Kenya over these past 7 years, and we recognize your important work to make each and every branch campus of Moi University a place of welcome for all tribes and religions.
As our partner university for more than 20 years through the AMPATH initiative and many other programs, we are grateful for all that you and Moi University continue to do to promote peace and reconciliation. We know this is an enormous setback, and you are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
