Exchange Students

Follow these steps to apply to IUPUI as an international exchange student.

You should apply as an exchange student if you are part of an external IUPUI program or attending a university with an official agreement. If you are unsure, please contact the iadvisor@iupui.edu for more information.

Application Process

  • Step 1: Receive Invitation to Apply

Staff from the IUPUI Office of Interanational Affairs (OIA) will provide official application instructions to the exchange partner.  The exchange partner will then officially nominate the student.

Prospective students should NOT complete an ApplyIU or Common App application. They need to wait for guidance from their organization or university.

  • Step 2: Submit Application

After being nominated, students will need to complete an official application via the guidance received. Once the application is complete, email iadvisor@iupui.edu to confirm.

After confirming that you have submitted your application, you will receive an email inviting you to open your Atlas account. You will submit your supporting documents electronically through Atlas, our online portal for international students.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Atlas»

You can also log into Atlas to see your next steps and see which documents have been reviewed and accepted. Our international admissions team will contact you if there are any questions about your documents.

  • Step 3: Receive a Decision

After you submit your academic records and proof of English proficiency (if applicable), your application will be reviewed for admission.

If admitted, you will be notified via email. Be sure to check your email on a regular basis in case there are any questions or additional materials needed.

  • Step 4: Submit Financial Documentation for Visa Purposes

We cannot issue you a visa document until you have completed this step.

If you will need a student visa in order to enroll at IUPUI, you must submit financial documentation verifying your ability to pay expenses for the duration of your program.

Each exchange program has different financial requirements for verification. You will be notified by OIA about the required amount for your specific exchange program. Note: your specific amount may be different than what is shown within your Atlas portal.

  • Step 5: Receive DS-2019

Once students have been admitted, OIA will produce their DS-2019.  This is the immigration document which students will need to apply for a J-1 student visa.

Students will receive a physical copy of their admission letter and immigration materials via courier service.

  • Step 6: Pay SEVIS fee and Schedule a Visa Appointment

You will need to pay a SEVIS fee and schedule an appointment with an United States embassy in order to receive your student visa (J-1) to study at IUPUI.

Students are required to pay their SEVIS fee prior to scheduling their visa appointment. Please see the following website for more detailed information on this process:  http://international.iupui.edu/visas/j1-students/apply.html

NOTE: If the embassay in your country is currently closed or closes before your appointment, please notify the OIA immediately.

  • Step 7: Complete Pre-Arrival Checklist in Atlas

Make sure to complete your Pre-Arrival Checklist located in Atlas

This checklist provides valuable information and steps to help students prepare for their arrival to the United States. There are important steps that MUST be completed before arrival, as well as some crucial post-arrival steps to help with visa regulations.

Please consult OIA with questions about what's in the Pre-Arrival Checklist.
