Upon Arrival at IUPUI

Upon your arrival in Indianapolis, please call our office at 317-274-7000 for a "check-in appointment" J-1& H1-B orientation as soon as possible. The orientation is hosted every Tuesday at 11:00 am in our office at ES 2126. If you are a J-1 exchange visitor, please bring your passport, DS-2019 form and I-94 Arrival/Departure record to the orientation so that we can complete your SEVIS registration on schedule. If you are a H1-B employee, please bring your passport, I-94 Arrival/Departure record and H1-B approval notice so that we can document your arrival in the US.

The orientation takes from 1-1/2 hours and provides important information about your visa, health insurance, obtaining a social security number, taxes, opening a bank account, obtaining a driver’s license and general information about the university and city. It is not possible to apply for the social security number until you have been in the U.S. for 10 business days.  Therefore if you are not able to attend orientation for more than one week after arrival, it does not delay your application for a social security number.

J-1 scholars, if it is not possible for you to attend this check-in appointment within 25 days of the start date of your DS-2019, you must notify our office of your arrival date in the U.S. and provide a copy of your I-94 Arrival/Departure record to this office. Otherwise, the SEVIS system will convert your record to "inactive" status. Our office contact information is below.
